The key to the engine’s smooth power delivery is that, despite the mechanics of two turbochargers providing variable power, they deliver a consistent 2.85bar pressure to the intercooler at all times. One smaller turbocharger provides near instantaneous power at low engine speeds, while a larger turbocharger provides the mid to top end power. The boost of both turbochargers is a regulated by an ECU and three control valves. This arrangement ensures optimum performance delivery from just above idle speed through to the red line and makes for impressive performance figures and an absence of turbo lag.

Speaking of performance, the ‘s’ in X5 3.0sd denotes a 40kW and 65Nm jump in power and torque over the X5 3.0d, for a figure of 200kW at 4400rpm (up from 4000rpm) and 565Nm at 2000rpm (up from 1750rpm) respectively.

The BMW’s power/torque outputs compare to the Q7 4.2 V8 TDI’s 240kW/760Nm, Range Rover TDV8′s 200kW/640Nm, Touareg V10 TDI’s 230kW/750Nm and Touareg R50 V10 TDI’s 258kW/850Nm.

Power in the X5 3.0sd is transmitted to the road via a standard six-speed automatic gearbox and BMW’s renowned xDrive four-wheel-drive system. Complementing xDrive technology is the use of Dynamic Stability Control + including Dynamic Traction Control. DSC+ is the most advanced stability control system currently available on a production car and comes with four additional features above and beyond the original DSC system. DSC+ adds Hill-start assistant, Brake pre-tensioning, Brake fade compensation and Brake drying. Dynamic Traction Control, when engaged, allows for a degree of wheel slip to permit forward motion on slippery surfaces such as ice and snow. It also allows the keener driver to revel in the handling characteristics of the X5 without the DSC+ interrupting the flow unless the situation becomes critical.

Diesel power accounts for more than 90 per cent of X5 sales in europe and the new X5 3.0sd is being introduced to satisfy the wishes of some existing X5 owners who asked for an even greater level of performance. To cope with this the X5 3.0sd features uprated brakes compared to a standard 3.0d and comes fitted with thicker and larger diameter disc brakes for greater retardation. For a subtle and discreet visual differentiation between the two diesel X5 models the 3.0sd also has a chrome kidney grille with titanium vertical slats.

The announcement of the X5 3.0sd coincides with the news that the M Sport trim level is now available on the rest of the BMW X5 range. Launched initially on the 4.8-litre car only, M Sport allows customers to further personalise their vehicle. Standard M Sport equipment includes 19-inch light alloy M V-spoke wheels, M Aerodynamic bodystyling, M leather steering wheel, Sports suspension, Sports seats, Nevada leather upholstery, Anthracite headlining and Brushed Aluminium interior trim.

Since the EUA are slowly abandon the Full Size SUVs in detriment of smaller vehicles, like the BMW X3, because these have a lesser consumption, more environment friendly, more agile and easy to park, the Mercedes Benz is comes losing market.

With the new midsized SUV GLK, Mercedes hopes to return once again to the top of this market niche.

Unfortunately for Mercedes it’s speculated that BMW and Audi are preparing SUVs even more small, the X1 and the Q3.The GLK brings together the strengths of Mercedes full-size models within an entry-luxury format that also has benefits in terms of fuel consumption. GLK will slot below the M-Class in the lineup.

This intelligent “right-sizing” sees Mercedes-Benz achieve – in parallel with its BLUETEC initiative – a further contribution to the reduction of CO₂ emissions within the SUV segment.

The upcoming GLK-Class will launch in March 2008, this midsized SUV looked inspiration in Class G with the objective in mind to seduce the adventure drivers.

As an entry-luxury SUV, the future GLK adds a fifth model to the successful Mercedes-Benz SUV range, offering customers a new entry point into the world of Mercedes-Benz all-wheel drive and securing yet another growth market segment for the Stuttgart auto manufacturer.

Lamborghini as automaker of high-performance grand tourers and supercars, had then its origins as a tractor manufacturer.

   The first Lamborghini off-road vehicle, that wasn’t a tractor, was the Cheetah, it was built on contract for the American firm Mobility Technology International, which were contacted by the U.S. military to design and built an all-terrain vehicle.

The Cheetah had a rear-mounted Chrysler V8 engine and was presented at the Geneva Auto Show in 1977.

With the success that Porsche is having with the Cayenne, plans for a Lamborghini SUV are growing again, there’s a rumor that Lamborghini will make a  successor of the LM002 and return to its off-roads origins.

  Future Lamborghini SUV will be probably unveiled sometime in 2009, based on a modified Cayenne platform and, under the bonnet a version of the 5.0 liter V10 engine used in the Gallardo and Audi S6 and S8, but also a 4.5 liter V8 from the Cayenne could be available. Maximum output will be around 500 hp. There is a also the possibility for European market to get the 5.9 litre V12 diesel engine used in the Audi Q7.

Porsche/Volkswagen jointly did extensive off-road testing with test mules and both vehicles are capable off-roaders. Volkswagen entered a highly modified Touareg in the Paris Dakar.

In the 2003 Dakar Rally Volkswagen entered a team of 2WD VW Tarek buggies. VW claimed 6th overall, driven by Stephane Henrard and co driver Bobby Willis. In the following year, the 2004 Dakar Rally saw the debut rally for the T2 class purpose built Race Touareg by Volkswagen Motorsport. Bruno Saby and co driver Matthew Stevenson claimed 6th position overall. In the 2005 Dakar Rally, Jutta Kleinschmidt and co driver Fabrizia Pons claimed 3rd spot overall in the Race Touareg. A modified Touareg dubbed Stanley won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge. In the 2006 Dakar Rally, VW driver Giniel de Villiers and co driver Tina Thorner claimed 2nd spot the highest ever for a diesel model in the new Race Touareg 2 which had a shorter wheelbase than the 1st two models Rallied. For the 2007 Dakar Rally, VW driver Mark Miller and Ralph Pitchford drove the Race Touareg 2 to 4th position overall.

Bentley Motors is the maker of powerful, luxurious, grand touring motor cars, does a SUV fit in the Bentley’s model lineup?

Now that the luxury SUV market does not show any signs of slowing down but rather keeps going, is Bentley intention to develop a genuine production 4×4 SUV as a part of a plan by Bentley’s parent company, VW to expand the marque into new areas?

With a luxurious SUV, Bentley will seduced a new class of clients or set to rival the Porsche Cayenne, VW Touareg, Cadillac Escalade, Audi Q7 and Lincoln Navigator.

Being part of the VW group Bentley has access to Audi’s Q7 platform, as well as the Porsche engineered VW Touareg /Porsche Cayenne, a Bentley SUV would be then the fourth model to be built around the same platform and technique, and it wouldn’t be the first SUV produced be Bentley, the first steps into the SUV market were already made by Bentley years ago with the concept known as Dominator that was based around a Range Rover and used the same engine, commissioned in 1994 by the Sultan of Brunei. 

Bentley SUV could be powered by a 6.0 litre Twin Turbo W12 engine from the Bentley Continental GT delivering 560 HP or a more conservative 6.75-litre V8 with 475 bhp alike to the one in the Arnage.
