Rumours and more rumours, is effectively Ferrari preparing the launch of a SUV?
Well, why not,
After the global success achieved by the SUV of one of its most direct competitors! yes I’m talking about the Porsche the famous sport car builder that a few years ago decided to put in its trim a SUV, the magnificent Cayenne and what about Lamborghini is also preparing a new SUV ?

Unlike Porsche that are using 4wd in the 911, Ferrari has not any of its sport cars equipped with the 4×4 system , but this don’t must be a problem, because Fiat Group has 4×4 that experience.
Maserati witch is controlled by Ferrari has already worked in a SUV project, the Maserati Kubang GT Wagon.

Some artistic previews anticipating the aspect that will have the new SUV from Ferrari.

BMW’s class-leading Sports Activity Vehicle is now available with the world’s most powerful production six-cylinder diesel powerplant. The award-winning twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre diesel engine has been brought to the BMW X5 range to cater for a growing demand for performance SUVs.

GREATER efficiency and choice, along with high performance and segment-leading dynamics, are the main attractions of the latest addition to the BMW E70-series X5 luxury SUV.

The BMW X5 3.0 sd provides the driver with 286hp and a flat torque curve with a peak of 580Nm from a lowly 1,750rpm to ensure rapid performance. The X5 3.0sd is capable of accelerating from zero to 62mph (100Km/h) in 7.0 seconds before going on to a top speed of 146mph (235 Km/h).

The twin-turbo direct-injection diesel 3.0sd is the BMW’s riposte to the burgeoning ‘fast’ diesel phenomenon typified by the Audi Q7 V8 TDI, Range Rover TDV8 and Volkswagen’s Touareg V10 TDI.

The drivetrain in the BMW X5 3.0sd is unique in its segment as it utilizes two differently sized turbochargers operating in sequential stages depending on driver inputs. The key to the engine’s smooth power delivery is that, despite the mechanics of two turbochargers providing variable power, they deliver a consistent 2.85bar pressure to the intercooler at all times. One smaller turbocharger provides near instantaneous power at low engine speeds, while a larger turbocharger provides the mid to top end power. The boost of both turbochargers is a regulated by an ECU and three control valves. This arrangement ensures optimum performance delivery from just above idle speed through to the red line and makes for impressive performance figures and an absence of turbo lag.

Speaking of performance, the ‘s’ in X5 3.0sd denotes a 40kW and 65Nm jump in power and torque over the X5 3.0d, for a figure of 200kW at 4400rpm (up from 4000rpm) and 565Nm at 2000rpm (up from 1750rpm) respectively.

The BMW’s power/torque outputs compare to the Q7 4.2 V8 TDI’s 240kW/760Nm, Range Rover TDV8′s 200kW/640Nm, Touareg V10 TDI’s 230kW/750Nm and Touareg R50 V10 TDI’s 258kW/850Nm.

Power in the X5 3.0sd is transmitted to the road via a standard six-speed automatic gearbox and BMW’s renowned xDrive four-wheel-drive system. Complementing xDrive technology is the use of Dynamic Stability Control + including Dynamic Traction Control. DSC+ is the most advanced stability control system currently available on a production car and comes with four additional features above and beyond the original DSC system. DSC+ adds Hill-start assistant, Brake pre-tensioning, Brake fade compensation and Brake drying. Dynamic Traction Control, when engaged, allows for a degree of wheel slip to permit forward motion on slippery surfaces such as ice and snow. It also allows the keener driver to revel in the handling characteristics of the X5 without the DSC+ interrupting the flow unless the situation becomes critical.

Diesel power accounts for more than 90 per cent of X5 sales in europe and the new X5 3.0sd is being introduced to satisfy the wishes of some existing X5 owners who asked for an even greater level of performance. To cope with this the X5 3.0sd features uprated brakes compared to a standard 3.0d and comes fitted with thicker and larger diameter disc brakes for greater retardation. For a subtle and discreet visual differentiation between the two diesel X5 models the 3.0sd also has a chrome kidney grille with titanium vertical slats.

The announcement of the X5 3.0sd coincides with the news that the M Sport trim level is now available on the rest of the BMW X5 range. Launched initially on the 4.8-litre car only, M Sport allows customers to further personalise their vehicle. Standard M Sport equipment includes 19-inch light alloy M V-spoke wheels, M Aerodynamic bodystyling, M leather steering wheel, Sports suspension, Sports seats, Nevada leather upholstery, Anthracite headlining and Brushed Aluminium interior trim.

Since the EUA are slowly abandon the Full Size SUVs in detriment of smaller vehicles, like the BMW X3, because these have a lesser consumption, more environment friendly, more agile and easy to park, the Mercedes Benz is comes losing market.

With the new midsized SUV GLK, Mercedes hopes to return once again to the top of this market niche.

Unfortunately for Mercedes it’s speculated that BMW and Audi are preparing SUVs even more small, the X1 and the Q3.The GLK brings together the strengths of Mercedes full-size models within an entry-luxury format that also has benefits in terms of fuel consumption. GLK will slot below the M-Class in the lineup.

This intelligent “right-sizing” sees Mercedes-Benz achieve – in parallel with its BLUETEC initiative – a further contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions within the SUV segment.

The upcoming GLK-Class will launch in March 2008, this midsized SUV looked inspiration in Class G with the objective in mind to seduce the adventure drivers.

As an entry-luxury SUV, the future GLK adds a fifth model to the successful Mercedes-Benz SUV range, offering customers a new entry point into the world of Mercedes-Benz all-wheel drive and securing yet another growth market segment for the Stuttgart auto manufacturer.

Integrated in new C-Class, sharing with it the platform and the main mechanical components, the platform was subject to structural modifications decurrent of the GLK vocation, with prominence for the suspension with Agility Control that was reviewed.

The midsize SUV of Stuttgart must measure about 4,3 meters of length and its appearance identifies it as a Mercedes the front fascia is capped off by a typical Mercedes-Benz grille and receives the wide fender flares from the C that give the GLK an aggressive stance and accent, while the back section, with straight forms, resembles it a GL.

In the interior will be preserved also some decoration elements of the C-Class, despite the conduction position is raised, the comfort, the materials quality and the functionality will be a constant in the GLK, as well of-road helps, which are imported of the ML, as the security devices, including the package “Pre-Safe”.

The GLK range will debut in 2009 with the possibility of a V8-powered GLK63 AMG version coming in 2010.

The car will be offered in rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions, with different versions and engines according to the propulsion mode.

Mercedes knows, like all car manufacturers, the vast majority of the buyers of compact SUV’s will never take their vehicles off the asphalt and acknowledges it with a offer of two different versions of the GLK, the GLK Townside prepared for the asphalt use, equipped with low profile tires and lowered ride height of 30 millimeters, that will provide better performances and stability when in the road, The GLK Freeside, on the other hand, for drivers that are looking for a little more adventure has been optimised for off-road terrain with longer spring travel and a softer basic set-up.” Stylistically, the Townside represents a production ready version with less dramatic rocker panel moldings, no power bulges in the hood and no roof rack.

Both versions are equipped highly efficient 4MATIC all-wheel drive system and with all-new four-cylinder diesel engine – a power unit that is both economical and, thanks to BLUETEC, extremely clean, the 7G-Tronic TouchShift automatic transmission is also the same.

The first Lamborghini off-road vehicle, that wasn’t a tractor, was the Cheetah, it was built on contract for the American firm Mobility Technology International, which were contacted by the U.S. military to design and built an all-terrain vehicle.

The Cheetah had a rear-mounted Chrysler V8 engine and was presented at the Geneva Auto Show in 1977.

Between 1986 and 1993 Lamborghini built approximately 300 SUVs with the name LM002 , with a similar design of the Cheetah but powered by the V12 from the Lamborghini Countach mounted in the front with first 375 bhp and later on 455 bhp, its aggressive styling and powerful engine made it a success for Lamborghini.

Civilian models were outfitted with a full luxury package, including full leather trim, tinted power windows, air conditioning, and a premium stereo mounted in a roof console.

In 1988 an LM002 was prepared for the Paris-Dakar rally with an upgraded suspension, engine modifications which brought it to 600 hp (450 kW), full roll cage, plexiglas windows, and GPS equipment, but for it didn’t entered in this competition, although it did participate in the Rallye des Pharaons in Egypt and another in Greece, both times driven by Sandro Munari.

THE SUCCESSOR

With the success that Porsche is having with the Cayenne, plans for a Lamborghini SUV are growing again, there’s a rumor that Lamborghini will make a successor of the LM002 and return to its off-roads origins.

Future Lamborghini SUV will be probably unveiled sometime in 2009, based on a modified Cayenne platform and, under the bonnet a version of the 5.0 liter V10 engine used in the Gallardo and Audi S6 and S8, but also a 4.5 liter V8 from the Cayenne could be available. Maximum output will be around 500 hp. There is a also the possibility for European market to get the 5.9 litre V12 diesel engine used in the Audi Q7.

The BMW X5 defines an expanding group of big, powerful SUVs that shine for their on-pavement agility and responsive acceleration, with an emphasis on safety, comfort and luxury appointments.

All trims share the same standard six-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic shifting, as well as BMW’s xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive system. Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic climate control and leather upholstery (leatherette on the 3.0si trim); an optional third-row seat adds versatility. Safety features for the X5 include first and second row side curtain airbags, Dynamic Stability Control with rollover sensor, run-flat tires and adaptive brake lights.

The BMW X3 is a compact luxury SUV that offers a high seating position, all-wheel-drive traction, exemplary performance, solid build quality and the distinctive good looks shoppers in this category are looking for. Indeed, the X3 SUV is a great alternative for sport sedan shoppers who require just a bit more utility in their compact luxury vehicle.

The BMW X3′s performance is enabled by its responsive four or six-cylinder engines, precise steering and a full-time all-wheel-drive system, dubbed xDrive. With the ability to instantly detect slippage and redirect power to the wheels with the most traction, the xDrive system gives the compact BMW SUV confidence-inspiring handling in both wet and dry conditions

The X3 comes in two forms; the SE and the M Sport. It also has a choice of two petrol and three diesel engines.

The Touareg is Volkswagen’s first official four-wheel drive SUV for the mainstream public, is a mid-size luxury SUV produced by German automaker Volkswagen since 2003.

We can say that was the second utility vehicle from the automaker, after the much older Volkswagen Thing “Kurierwagen” (1969) or the military vehicle Volkswagen Kübelwagen (1940).

The Touareg was co-developed with Porsche and shares the same basic architecture with the Cayenne as a cost-sharing initiative.

The goal was to create an off-road vehicle that could handle as a sports car.

The Touareg, alongside an already lengthy options list, could be equipped with a driving dynamics package, a rollover sensor, a 620 watt Dynaudio sound system and redesigned comfort seats. All diesel versions now have the diesel particulate filter standard.

The air suspension package (standard on the V-10 version, an option on other versions) automatically raises or lowers the vehicle depending on road conditions and the speed you’re driving. It can be activated manually as well.

Comes with a sophisticated “4Motion permanent all-wheel drive system” that splits torque evenly between the front and rear axles. It can also shift up to 100% of the power to either axle, depending on road conditions. Plus, it includes low-range gearing for serious off-roading.

Offers two engines with more than eight cylinders.

Comes with Volkswagen’s Intelligent Crash Response System, which automatically unlocks doors in a collision, disconnects the battery, shuts off the fuel supply and high-power electric components, then calls OnStar on vehicles equipped with that option.

Compared with 4- and 5-speed units, Touareg’s 6-speed automatic transmission improves acceleration and fuel economy while reducing emissions.

The 6-speed automatic comes with “regular” and “sport shift” modes, as well as an auto manual gate for drivers who want to pick their own gears.

Most surprising is the Touareg’s ability to handle off-road driving with ease.

R5 TDI: higher performance, lower consumption.

Bentley Motors is the maker of powerful, luxurious, grand touring motor cars, does a SUV fit in the Bentley’s model lineup?

Now that the luxury SUV market does not show any signs of slowing down but rather keeps going, is Bentley intention to develop a genuine production 4×4 SUV as a part of a plan by Bentley’s parent company, VW to expand the marque into new areas?

With a luxurious SUV, Bentley will seduced a new class of clients or set to rival the Porsche Cayenne, VW Touareg, Cadillac Escalade, Audi Q7 and Lincoln Navigator.

Being part of the VW group Bentley has access to Audi’s Q7 platform, as well as the Porsche engineered VW Touareg /Porsche Cayenne, a Bentley SUV would be then the fourth model to be built around the same platform and technique, and it wouldn’t be the first SUV produced be Bentley, the first steps into the SUV market were already made by Bentley years ago with the concept known as Dominator that was based around a Range Rover and used the same engine, commissioned in 1994 by the Sultan of Brunei.

Bentley SUV could be powered by a 6.0 litre Twin Turbo W12 engine from the Bentley Continental GT delivering 560 HP or a more conservative 6.75-litre V8 with 475 bhp alike to the one in the Arnage.
